Nyepi 2025: Bali’s Day of Silence and What Tourists Should Know
DENPASAR – On Saturday, March 29, 2025, Bali will observe Nyepi, the Hindu Day of Silence, marking the start of the Saka New Year. The 24-hour observance begins at 05:59 AM on March 29 and ends at 06:00 AM on March 30, during which the island will come to a complete standstill.
What Happens During Nyepi?
Nyepi is a day of self-reflection, and Balinese Hindus observe four main prohibitions:
- Amati Geni (No Fire or Light) – Avoiding fire, electricity, and other sources of light.
- Amati Karya (No Work) – A day of rest and spiritual purification.
- Amati Lelungan (No Travel) – Everyone, including tourists, must stay indoors.
- Amati Lelanguan (No Entertainment) – No entertainment or leisure activities.
To ensure complete silence, electricity, internet, and broadcasting services will be suspended. Local security officers, known as pecalang, will patrol the streets to ensure compliance. While tourists are not legally penalized, those who violate the rules may be reminded and guided back to their accommodations.
Essential Tips for Tourists
- Avoid making travel plans on Nyepi. Airports, ports, and bus terminals will be closed.
- Stock up on food, cash, and essentials beforehand. Restaurants and most businesses will be closed.
- Stay indoors, keep noise levels low, and turn off outdoor lights.
- Hotels provide limited services, but emergency medical facilities will remain open.
