President Approves Transfer of Bali Nine Inmates to Australia
JAKARTA – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has given initial approval for the transfer of Australian inmates, members of the “Bali Nine” drug smuggling group, to their home country, according to Minister of Law and Human Rights Supratman Andi Atgas.
“Regarding the Bali Nine, I emphasize once again, the President has agreed in principle to proceed with the transfer process,” Minister Supratman stated at the Presidential Palace on Monday.
However, he cautioned that the process must not be rushed, as it requires careful adherence to existing mechanisms.
“The mechanism for such transfers is still under review, as we currently lack specific regulations. The President has instructed the Coordinating Minister for Law and myself to thoroughly examine this matter,” Supratman explained.
The review is in its final stages, with preparations expected to conclude by December or early 2025.
“While I cannot confirm a specific timeline, the President’s agreement allows us to move forward with preparations,” he added.
Earlier, Supratman revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding the transfer of five Australian nationals sentenced to life imprisonment for drug offenses. The evaluation is being carried out in collaboration with Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, Immigration, and Corrections Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra and other stakeholders.
The findings will be presented to the President to ensure the decision aligns with Indonesia’s best interests.
The five Bali Nine members considered for transfer include Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, and Martin Stephens.
