Bali Subway Project Commences the New Phase with Major Investment
The plan to build mass rapid transit (MRT) in Bali has entered a new phase.
PT Sarana Bali Dwipa Jaya (SBDJ) has appointed PT Bumi Indah Prima (BIP) as the main investor for the Bali Urban Rail and Associated Development project, later known as the Bali Subway. The groundbreaking for the Bali Subway project in Bali will be carried out in September 2024. The project is claimed to be a solution to traffic congestion on the Island of the Gods.
“PT Bumi Indah Prima will be our partner in realising our shared dream and, at the same time, be the lead investor who coordinates other investors involved in this process,” President Director of PT SBDJ, Ari Askhara, told the press on Wednesday, the 24th of July.
Askhara also said that the total investment value of the mega project reached US$20 billion. Meanwhile, the investment value of the first and second phases reached US$10.8 billion or approximately Rp175 trillion.
“The total investment value of the first two phases is US$10.8 billion. Meanwhile, the total planned four phases is US$20 billion,” Askhara continued.
The construction of the Bali Subway mega project will be carried out in four phases as follows:
- First phase: I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport – Central Parking Kuta – Seminyak – Berawa – Cemagi;
- Second phase: I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport – Jimbaran – Udayana University – Nusa Dua;
- Third phase: Central Parking Kuta – Sesetan – Renon – Sanur; and
- Fourth phase: Renon – Sukawati – Ubud.
The Managing Director of PT SBDJ, Ketut Pasek Senjaya, added that the Bali MRT transportation system will be made into a double track. The Bali Subway project will also include the construction of transportation infrastructure in the form of tunnels and underground railways.
“We will make a second panel in each section so that the direction from the airport to Kuta, and vice versa, becomes two-way,” Senjaya told the press on the same day as well.
PT SBDJ targets the construction of the first phase to be completed in early 2028. This target coincides with the start of the second phase of the Ngurah Rai Airport to Nusa Dua route, which is targeted for completion in 2031.
