Australian Mother Desperate to Raise Funds for Comatose Son After Crash in Bali

Shane Ramsay, a 30-year-old carpenter from Perth, is in a coma after a serious moped accident in Bali and his mother is urgently seeking funds to bring him home.

The mother of the Perth native — the latter is currently comatose in a hospital in Seminyak, Bali — is urgently seeking funds to airlift her son back to Australia and is even considering selling her home to cover the costs which are estimated to be around A$150,000.

Ramsay had travelled to Bali to serve as a groomsman at a close friend’s wedding, but he had not taken out travel insurance. His mother, whose name is Catherine Ramsay, flew to Bali immediately after the accident and has been tirelessly working to bring her injured son back to Australia.

“I just want to get him home and we’re in a strange country and I just want to go home,” Mrs Ramsay told the press. “He needs to be back in Perth […] The medevac, I don’t know what that’s going to cost. I’ll sell the house if I have to; we just got to get him back to where he needs to be.”

A GoFundMe campaign, billed as “Help Bring Shane Home!”, has been launched to help bring the 30-year-old Australian back to his home country.

“Shane was involved in a very serious accident on the moped in Bali resulting in a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, blood in his lungs, and severe brain damage”, the campaign organiser Amyleigh Mitchell wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Shane has undertaken neurosurgery and is now in a coma. Unfortunately, Shane had no travel insurance and we are hoping to raise as much as possible to help cover the hospital costs and bring Shane home. Surgery alone costs $53,000. Every night in the hospital is an additional $9,000. The flight to bring him home is going to cost a minimum of $150,000.”

Mitchell also hoped that the collected funds would help Ramsay be taken care of in a much more familiar environment. The GoFundMe campaign has raised, as of the 21st of August, over A$96,000.

“We just want to bring Shane home as soon as possible to be closer to all his friends and family! Please – any donations will be very appreciated and will relieve some of the pressure on his family to cover the costs,” Mitchell also wrote.
